Day Excursions

If your idea of a good time includes anything outside, then Bozeman has you covered. Yellowstone National Park is only 90 miles away. To get to the park’s famous Roosevelt Arch, drive through the jaw-dropping scenery of the Paradise Valley, home to cowboys, movie stars, and everyone in between. If you’re into anything downhill, be it skiing or mountain biking, you have to experience the adrenaline-packed town of Big Sky. Tucked in Gallatin Canyon between Bozeman and Yellowstone, Big Sky Resort’s Lone Peak tram will zip you to the top of Lone Peak where you can see three states thanks to a 360-degree view.

IIf you want a truly unique and crowd-free experience, locals take their families to Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park, less than an hour away. These caverns feature 90-minute underground cave tours that feature natural stone slides, stalactites, stalagmites, and more. Plus, it stays a constant 48 degrees regardless of what the weather is like outside.

If you’re bored in Montana, then call a doctor because something is wrong. Montana has it all—you just have to bring your thirst for adventure. Hire a local guide and try your hand at fly-fishing on one of the six rivers nearby. The cutthroats, rainbows, and browns are always hungry. Strap on your boots to explore hundreds of miles of world-class hiking trails right outside the ranch gate, or pick up a guidebook and choose your own adventure. Golf your thing? Hit the links under our big sky. Did someone say road trip? Then check out the Beartooth Highway that winds well above timberline for 68 miles. You’ll see snow skiers in August and enough alpine scenery to last a lifetime. For the water lovers, there’s whitewater rafting for the thrillseekers, and more than a few hot springs for a more relaxed experience.

While Montana is glorious in the summer, our winters are truly magical. With two downhill ski destinations nearby, Bozeman is a bona fide ski town. You can cross-country ski beside bison in Yellowstone or take a cozy snow coach to experience another side of the park and a frozen Old Faithful. Head to Cooke City, rent some snowmobiles, and dive into the backcountry during winter—you will not forget that!

Downtown Bozeman

Bozeman’s downtown combines classic cow town charm with enough shopping to keep you busy for the weekend. Local tour companies are available to take you on a tour of our town’s breweries or feel free to explore them on your own—there are more breweries than you’d think for a town of 50,000. Restaurants in Bozeman have everyone in your party covered—from monster burgers to fresh sushi. As with any small mountain town, there are a number of quirky shops that make shopping for those tough-to-please relatives too easy.

No trip to Bozeman would be complete without visiting the Museum of the Rockies. If there’s a dinosaur lover in your group, they can’t miss the fully-mounted T. Rex skeleton unearthed right here in the Treasure State. Dinosaur connoisseurs can watch scientists in the Bowman Dinosaur Viewing Lab as they work to unearth fossils millions of years old. While there, be sure to stroll the picturesque campus of Montana State University. If you’re here in the fall, pick up tickets to watch the Bobcats battle it out on the gridiron.
